Dreading Writing Your College Application Essay? Tips From The Pros
Dreading Writing Your College Application Essay? Tips From The Pros Bob Davis â12, my tour leader, was extraordinarily patient, walking me through U.Chicagoâs outstanding array of clubs and societies, including the MSAC Committee. U.Chicago is one of the only schools I am considering that even offers a student-led Diversity Committee, much less one that advises faculty and university management on key outreach issues.Outstanding. As a high school and MEK English teacher, Ashley brings ready classroom management skills and a strong rapport with students to MEK. However, she is also well-versed in MEK strategy for teaching College Test Prep, H.S. Test Prep, and College Application Essays. They want to see how you function when removed from the safe confines of formula and expectation. On the subject of essay prompts, Meredith points out that the 7 variations offered by the Common App are designed to give all applicants the opportunty to share something meaningful about themselves. Many selective colleges and universities have their own essay prompts. Other colleges may simply offer you free writing space to provide a personal statement. However, the Common Application is perhaps the best starting point for anticipating likely college essay prompts. There are any number of formulas out there for writing personal statements for college applications. Some encourage you to stick to the traditionalopening-body-conclusionformula, while others insist you should take a risk to spice up the admission officerâs reading experience. None of them are wrong, but it doesnât mean theyâre right for you. As the name implies, writing apersonal statementis apersonalexperience, making it just a little bit different for everyone. You should also make sure that your essay is coherent â" that your ideas flow and your arguments make sense. Donât be afraid to show off your writing skills, but donât do anything that takes away from your core message. This video shows you how to write an effective college admissions essay. Finally, Rachel has a detailed list to work from. For similar categories of essays, Rachel plans to write one rough essay, then tweak it for different colleges. Tragedies, ultimately, can be very positive, transformative topics to write about as they often show us who we are under intense pressure. Do not shy away from writing about the bad in life as it is a relatable experience that all people will go through at one point or another. Furthermore, this type of essay invites comparison. The #1 mistake students make when writing about tragedy is effectively writing a âsob story.â This is an essay which only tries to make someone feel sympathy for you. Now Rachel goes through her collegesâ essay prompts and groups similar essays together to come up with a list of what she has to write. The paradox of the overzealous editing of the college essay by many helicopter parents is that they donât know what a college essay is really about. Unlike the other parts of the application, where high grade point averages and SAT scores reign supreme, the essay is less about being impressive than it is about being authentic. On the other hand, if you have experienced difficulty or tragedy that affected you deeply, you may choose to write about this experience in your college application. In order to write a great essay however, you need to realize that there is a right way and a wrong way to approach this topic type. The college essay provides a good opportunity to leave a long-lasting impression on the reader, apart from the interview and an efficient way to let the people in the admission know you closely. A person they like and remember through the college essay is most likely to be selected. Cited a few real-world examples of college essays that actually worked. When my best friend John Smith â20 told me about U.Chicagoâs diverse campus environment , I was excited, but skeptical â" diversity can mean different things to different people. So I went to see for myself, visiting on September 9th, 2017. The info session was intimate â" more so than any other I have attended â" with a relatively select group of students offered full campus access. It was right there in the last sentence of the first paragraph of Mikeyâs college essay. I was supposed to believe this typical high school senior, who had inhabited this planet for a slight 17 years, chose to use the word âhenceforth.â Mikey was a good kid. Membership includes a 10% discount on all editing orders. Some students try so hard to be creative, or to entice the reader with a sense of intrigue, that they sacrifice clarity. Not just the process, but the actual statement itself, too. In addition to making sure that all of these things are included, you should also be aware of HOW you write your essay. Admissions committees want essays to be concise â" you want to make your point in about 700 words or less. If your reader is one paragraph in and thinking, âI donât have a clue what this student is talking about,â youâve moved from arousing interest to creating confusion. Itâs certainly possible and often effective to begin your essay with a description that piques interest without necessarily revealing exactly what the description is about. But while enticing and intriguing are good, bewildering and unintelligible are not. You may have a beautifully crafted essay or a wonderful story to tell, but if you donât take the time to proofread, your essay may be overlooked and end up in the rejection pile. Careful proofreading shows the reader you care and you arenât sloppy.

Is It Okay For Parents To Help Edit Their Childs College Essay?
Is It Okay For Parents To Help Edit Their Child's College Essay? Editing for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes is fine, but donât change the voice of the essay. If an essay is too âpolishedâ it may seem inauthentic, creating confusion in the reader. Make sure that you are confident in your essay and accept feedback, but donât allow others to change your essay in any way that will cause it to lose its original message. Parents should always help their child in a positive way as long as they are not writing the ideas for the student. Believe me, those admissions officers are experienced and they can definitely spot the difference between a 50 year-old businesspersonâs phraseology and a 17-year-old seniorâs own voice and manner of expression. In most cases, your essay isnât the factor that determines your admission to college. However, an offensive, off-putting, or forgettable essay can hurt your chances. Donât be afraid to take classes that will improve your skills and make you more confident. Every class you take does not have to apply to your major. If you are a communications major, but computer science has always interested you, take a computer class. Overcome your fear of public speaking by taking a theater or speech class. College can be the bridge between childhood and adulthood. If your essay doesnât present any new information, it will be dull and forgettable. If you really want to make an impression, let your personality shine through. The essay is supposed to reveal information that you havenât had a chance to discuss elsewhere in the application. Itâs meant to be a deeper dive into who you are beyond the numbers and accolades. If you just want a break from studying, find out when the Ultimate Frisbee Club meets. Clubs and activities provide endless ways to broaden your horizons. Consider taking a community college course while youâre still in high school. That will allow you to gauge your interest in a field of study while earning college credit. CFNC can help you figure out what interests you and ultimately help you choose a career you will enjoy. As we mentioned earlier, you donât know who is reading your essay or how they feel about these subjects. Itâs best not to offend them or make them feel uncomfortable. Living away from home for the first time can be intimidating. Try joining clubs and organizations to develop a new community and to make new friends with similar interests. Activities can also help you build confidence while developing important leadership and teamwork skills. If youâre interested in politics, try joining student government. We would expect a nursing applicant to have had academic training and extracurricular choices that support a desire to help others. A student who highlights their love of community service but has only one or two short-term service opportunities is probably not as committed as he or she wants to claim. Exhibit #2 is the Operation Varsity Blues scandal. As we enter a new admissions cycle one, of the challenges for our profession is mitigating the damage done by that criminal conspiracy and trying to restore public confidence in the college admissions process. Last year's Operation Varsity Blues scandal means that college admissions can't return to business as usual. We need to ensure that the admissions process is fair and equitable, that we don't allow those with money to cut in line and that we don't reward those who make things up or embellish their credentials. We shouldn't abandon a process based on trust, but we also need to make decisions based on information that is verifiable. Editing is vastly different from original writing so this needs to be clarified first, as it has to be the voice and personal memories of the applicant not the parent. The sooner the family treats this as a team effort it will be much easier for the 12th grader to feel as though they are not alone in this process. My preference (and admissions officersâ) would be that parents are minimally involved in the essay. By avoiding the topics listed above, youâll ensure that your essay helps â" instead of hurts â" your chances of admission. Make sure that your essay is more than a recitation of the accomplishments, activities, and experiences already hashed out in the application.

College Essays
College Essays I decided to create the first high school branch of the organization; I liked its unique way of approaching health and social issues. Rather than just raising money and channeling it through third parties, each branch âadoptsâ one village and travels there to provide for its basic needs. As branch president, I organize events from small stands at public gatherings to 60-person dinner fundraisers in order to raise both money and awareness. Styled in a t-shirt, shorts, and a worn, dark green lanyard, I sprint across the quad from the elective âSpeaking Arabic through the Rassias Methodâ to âKnitting Nirvanaâ. This afternoon is just one of many at Governorâs School East, where I have been transformed from a high school student into a philosopher, a thinker, and an avid learner. While I attend GS at Meredith College for Natural Science, the lessons learned and experiences gained extend far beyond physics concepts, serial dilutions, and toxicity. 140,000 students rate everything from their professors to their campus social scene. A teacher or college counselor is your best resource. And before you send it off, check, check again, and then triple check to make sure your essay is free of spelling or grammar errors. You don't need to have started your own business or have spent the summer hiking the Appalachian Trail. Colleges are simply looking for thoughtful, motivated students who will add something to the first-year class. From growing HeLa cells to trying to kill them with different compounds, I was able to gain the hands-on experience necessary for me to realize once again why I love science. This past summer, I had the privilege of participating in the University of Notre Dameâs Research Experience for Undergraduates program . Using flow cytometry to excite each individually suspended cell with a laser, the scattered light from the cells helped to determine which cells were living, had died from apoptosis or had died from necrosis. Using this collected data, it was possible to determine if the curcumin and/or the nanoparticles had played any significant role on the cervical cancer cells. Later, I was able to image cells in 4D through con-focal microscopy. I learn to trust myself to have difficult yet necessary conversations about the political and economic climate. First, let me share an example of how I helped one student find her essay thread, then Iâll offer you some exercises to help you find your own. I also worked to apply myself constructively in other ways. So, I will forgive and forget, love and inspire, experience and satire, laugh and cry, accomplish and fail, live and die. This is how I want to live my life, with this optimistic attitude that every day is a second chance. All the time, we have the opportunity to renew our perspective on life, to correct our mistakes, and to simply move on. Like the phoenix I will continue to rise from the ashes, experienced and renewed. I will not waste time for my life is already in flux. The difference between ADPP and most other organizations is its emphasis on the basics and making changes that last. Working towards those changes to solve real life problems is what excites me. Yet I've realized that life is fickler than I had imagined; it can disappear or change at any time. Several of my family members left this world in one last beating symphony; heart attacks seem to be a trend in my family. They left like birds; laughing one minute and in a better place the next. Using equipment that a high school student could only dream of using, I was able to map apoptosis versus necrosis in HeLa cells, a cervical cancer line, after treating them with curcumin-bound nanoparticles. You have a unique background, interests and personality. The best way to tell your story is to write a personal, thoughtful essay about something that has meaning for you. Be honest and genuine, and your unique qualities will shine through. Iâve learned how to encourage my peers to meet deadlines, to work around 30 different schedules at once, and to give presentations convincing people why my organization is worth their donation. But overall, ADPP has taught me that small changes can have immense impacts. My branch has helped raise almost $3,000 to build water sanitation plants, construct medical clinics, and develop health education programs in the small village of Zwedru.
How To Finish A College
How To Finish A College She took the reader through the stages of loving, hating, being disappointed, ashamed and finally acceptance, understanding and again loving while âDadâ was going through treatment. She allowed herself to be vulnerable which made the essay dynamite. Another student talked about the struggles of having learning disabilities and the pain that he experienced during his educational career. You might think, âI donât have anything like that.â All of us have experiences that have impacted our lives. Sit down with your folks and talk about your family and your âgrowing-upâ years. It becomes a difficult balance for the student, and thatâs why itâs so hard to complete their college essays. There are so many other things making demands on their time, energy and resources that the essay often falls by the wayside until the deadline is very, very near. At that point, the stress of knowing the essay must be written in such a short time and yet be of high quality can cause the student to have writerâs block and just not know where to start. This kind of stress can cause students to procrastinate the work even further or just plain give up. But it's also a unique opportunity that can make a difference at decision time. Admissions committees put the most weight on your high school grades and your test scores . However, selective colleges receive applications from many worthy students with similar scores and gradesâ"too many to admit. So they use your essay, along with your letters of recommendation and extracurricular activities , to find out what sets you apart from the other talented candidates. The essay really gives you an opportunity to be creative. Allow yourself time and donât throw it together right at the end. The personal statement might just be the hardest part of your college application. Mostly this is because it has the least guidance and is the most open-ended. One way to understand what colleges are looking for when they ask you to write an essay is to check out the essays of students who already got inâ"college essays that actually worked. After all, they must be among the most successful of this weird literary genre. It may sound like a chore, and it will certainly take a substantial amount of work. With all the competition trying to get into the good schools, your essay could make the difference. The best essays are the ones that provide real insight into who you are and how you think. Your essay should definitely provide perspective on you that augments what is found in the rest of your applicationâ¦.perhaps highlighting an area of passion for you that may not otherwise be obvious. The essays that read best are the ones written authentically, and from the heart. The essays usually cover topics relating to the studentâs experiences and opinions. The goal of the essay is to provide admission professionals an opportunity to see you, beyond your GPA and test scores, as an individual person with your own unique experiences. A great college essay gives the college an opportunity to see who you really are. Pick a meaningful experience and take the reader through your process of self-discovery. A man that she adored but discovered that he was a cocaine addict. When parents get involved in the nitty gritty of a college application, some families find conflict arises. If your situation is one where parents can offer opinions that are helpful and if you are the kind of student who is open to listening to suggestions, then surely parents can be good editors. Further, if you have parents who know grammar and writing conventions and can recognize flaws, go ahead and ask parents to help. For many students, finding an objective evaluator who is not a relative to help edit the essay is the best bet. Having a degree in English and being a published writer of college planning articles, and having edited hundreds of essays for students, I would be happy to help you too. You can also get your essay peer-reviewed and improve your own writing skills by reviewing other studentsâ essays. The essay is supposed to be reflective of the STUDENT, not the parent, and admissions reps are hoping to get a better picture of the applicantâs individuality and unique attributes. It is very easy for a rep to recognize an essay that has been coached someone other than the student. Unfortunately, too many cooks spoil the pot, so to speakâ¦and kids easily get confused when parents, English teachers, their counselor, and their friends all have different advice. Students should familiarize themselves with the campuses to which they are applying , understand the prompt, and answer from the heart. Make sure when you write your essay that you donât just ramble on and on. Follow the five-paragraph or a modified version of that format. You will need a catchy introduction where you pull in your reader, supportive examples, and then a wonderful conclusion where you pull everything together and leave the reader with a smile, a tear, or a wow.

How Many Paragraphs In An Essay?
How Many Paragraphs In An Essay? Publishers like certain genres to be within certain word counts, so any author who hopes to be published has to create their works within these counts. Many authors use word count as a motivational tool. I wrote an essay of 1550 words and it was barely 4.5 pages . This is a great guide, but people should be aware that these are just estimates. For example, I am currently writing a paper and have 5,000 words, but only 17 pages . And if you really wanted to know, you could do the calculations to figure it out. It would be 500,000 words if the pages are doubled spaced, and it would be 1 million words if the pages are single spaced. All you have to do is a little math to figure that out. It works well for me, but I know others who donât do well with it. I think it depends a lot on your personality, but forcing myself to be consistent day in and day out helps me get my books done. Without a daily word count, I would never complete them. What am I supposed to do if I write 1000 words, but it doesnât make the number of pages I want? I donât think I should have to write more words just because mine happen to be shorter than my classmates. I write longer words than most, so most of my pages have less words than the estimates on this page. You should change them so they are more accurate for people who use longer vocabulary words. If you can send me in the direction of the best wide font to do this, that would be great. Depending on the genre of book you are writing, word count can be critical in whether or not your writing can actually be published. On average, there are usually 100 to 200 words in a paragraph. So if youâd like a guesstimate, you can assume that a 1,000-word essay will have between five and ten paragraphs. Things like paragraph size and headers need to be taken into account as well. Aye how many words do I have to put if Iâm typing a 14 page essay. It is pretty petty of your teacher to do that but itâs also an important lesson in learning to read and follow directions as stated. I agree that there are a lot of people who are overly concerned with word count, but there are legitimate reasons to keep it in mind as well. If itâs not something important to you and your writing, you can ignore it. We both wrote the same number of words, his are just longer so it takes up more pages. That means people who write long words have an advantage even though long words arenât always good to use. Just because an estimate wonât be exactly right doesnât mean it isnât useful. To help them from getting stuck and editing each sentence over and over again as they write, they choose a minimum number of words they want to write each day. These words may not be perfect and will likely need to be heavily edited, but it gets the ideas down and keeps them from getting stuck on one area of their book. Itâs a way to motivate them to get the book done. Do you know what fonts have the widest spacing so that they fill up the page more quickly? I need to find a wide font so I donât have to write as many words to fill up the pages on my assignment.

Common App Essay Length, Word Limit, How To Write
Common App Essay Length, Word Limit, How To Write Early in your academic life, teachers and lecturers may give you both a structure for your essay and a guideline on how long each part of the essay should be. After all, if the teacher is allocating 80 marks for content in total and you can see 50% of the mark relates to a certain part of the essay, then 50% of your essayâs words should be devoted to that section. It should include a few general statements about the subject to provide a background to your essay and to attract the reader's attention. Then, he poured more water in, and everything slowly came out. We were told to figure out what had happened with no phones or textbooks, just our brains. We worked together to discover in the box was a siphon, similar to what is used to pump gas. We spent the next weeks building solar ovens, studying the dynamic of paper planes, diving into the content of the speed of light and space vacuums, among other things. We did this with no textbooks, flashcards, or information to memorize. This is a college essay that worked for Duke University. This is a college essay that worked for Harvard University. I became president of the California Scholarship Federation, providing students with information to prepare them for college, while creating opportunities for my peers to play a bigger part in our community. Fortunately, these tips for writing essays can help you along the way and get you on the path to a well-written essay. While this sounds like a lot of steps to write a simple essay, if you follow them you will be able to write more successful, clear and cohesive essays. Expository essays compare, explore, and discuss problems. While there's a bit of a storytelling element to them, their purpose is greater than that. It's always to explain some integral concept to the reader. When you write a descriptive essay, you want to involve the reader's senses and emotions. It should try to explain why you are writing the essay. It may include a definition of terms in the context of the essay, etc. It should also include a statement of the specific subdivisions of the topic and/or indication of how the topic is going to be tackled in order to specifically address the question. To write an argumentative essay, it's important to research and back up what you say in the text. For more detail, here are some argumentative essay writing tips. Weâve explained that the topic does not need to be impressive, and that the essay should not sound like your favorite writer or college professor. It will become very clear to the reader if you've not researched your topic enough. Try to make sure you allow yourself a good amount of time to research your essay properly, and include the findings in your essay, as well as your own thoughts and ideas. As the captain of the water polo and swim team Iâve led practices crafted to individually push my comrades to their limits, and Iâve counseled friends through circumstances similar to mine. Iâve done tons, and I can finally say Iâm proud of that. Unfortunately, mental health challenges have become so common these days that many students write personal statements about them and so it can be difficult to stand out. If you are feeling compelled to write about a mental health challenge, consider brainstorming some uncommon connections. âIf a student has an adult write it, the admissions committee can tell,â Michigan State Universityâs Director of Admissions Jim Cotter. It makes sense to me and that is how Iâve always done it. I think five paragraphs is a good number to shoot for when writing, but it isnât a hard-fast rule you need to hit every time. Each essay is different and require more or less paragraphs depending on the information you need to provide in the writing. Ultimately, your essay will be evaluated on the information you present, not on the number of paragraphs in the essay. The pressure from other class assignments and projects may be so time-consuming that the student has little time to dedicate to completing their essay. I was taught essays should be 7 paragraphs long, not 5. My teacher said 3 central paragraphs never gives enough detail to the topic, so we should write 5.

3 Common College Essay Mistakes To Avoid
3 Common College Essay Mistakes To Avoid I have only scratched the surface in this ever evolving field but know that the technological potential is limitless. Likewise, I feel that my time at State University would make my potential similarly limitless. In addition to just science, I am drawn to State University for other reasons. After weeks of songwriting and immersing myself in music, I determined that trust, vulnerability, and acceptance are loveâs inherent ingredients. I found I could apply my acceptance of his relapse to different experiences in my life, whether teenage gossip or catastrophe. I canât control the actions of others; I can only alter my perspective. Thanks to my mentors, I can identify and create almost every type of Northeastern mayfly, caddisfly, and stonefly. Where others see the engineering, experimentation, and presentation of science as a chore, I only see excitement. Even as a child I constantly sought it out, first on television with Bill Nye and The Mythbusters, then later in person in every museum exhibit I could find. Science in all its forms fascinated me, but science projects in particular were a category all to themselves. To me, science projects were a special joy that only grew with time. In fact, it was this continued fascination for hands-on science that brought me years later to the sauna that is the University of Alabama in mid-June. I, like State University, constantly work to explore the limits of nature by exceeding expectations. Long an amateur scientist, it was this drive that brought me to the University of Texas for its Student Science Training Program in 2013. Up to that point science had been my private past time, one I had yet to explore on anyone elseâs terms. Participating for the first time in a full-length research experiment at that level, I felt more alive, more engaged, than I ever had before. While attending the University of Rochester, I would like to study international relations or comparative politics while in graduate school. I find the research of Dr.âs Hein Goemans and Gretchen Helmke intriguing and would like the opportunity to learn more about it through the Graduate Visitation program. In college, as I became more politically engaged, my interest began to gravitate more towards political science. The interest in serving and understanding people has never changed, yet I realized I could make a greater difference doing something for which I have a deeper passion, political science. The 4 years I spent in the Army cultivated a deep-seated passion for serving society. Students receive comprehensive notes and suggestions â" written directly on the document â" so the essay improves significantly with every draft. And, with College Essay Solutionsâ time-tested approach, it wonât be. My statistical training in psychology orientates me toward a more quantitative graduate experience. Due to the University of Rochesterâs reputation for an extensive use of statistics in political science research, I would make a good addition to your fall class. Today I realize that this experience greatly influenced my professional ambition as well as my personal identity. While early on my professional ambitions were aimed towards the mental health field, later experiences have redirected me towards a career in academia. For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of science. As I got older, I realized that there are more worry lines than laugh lines. Deep trenches of lineaments cross her forehead, revealing the hardships of a childhood spent in poverty. The most recent are the lines chiseled around her thin mouth, as if out of marble. They are from pursing her lips in an attempt to suppress the pain after my Papou was taken by the same merciless hands that took her daughter away, but this time, those hands looked like cancer. While in the Army, I had the great honor to serve with several men and women who, like me, fought to make a difference in the world. During my tour of duty, I witnessed several shipmates suffer from various mental aliments. Driven by a commitment to serve and a desire to understand the foundations of psychological illness, I decided to return to school to study psychology. The winter of my seventh grade year, my alcoholic mother entered a psychiatric unit for an attempted suicide. Mom survived, but I would never forget visiting her at the ward or the complete confusion I felt about her attempt to end her life. Participating in the Student Science Training Program and working in their lab made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Just the thought of participating in a project at this level of scientific rigor made me forget that this was supposed to be my summer break and I spent the first day eagerly examining every piece of equipment. At the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at State University, I will be able to do just that. In a department where education and research are intermixed, I can continue to follow the path that towards scientific excellence. Long-mesmerized by hobbies like my work with the FIRST Robotics team, I believe State University would be the best choice to continue to nurture my love for electrical and computer engineering. I strive to work with the diverse group of people that State University wholeheartedly accommodates â" and who also share my mindset. They, like me, are there because State University respects the value of diversity. I know from personal experience that in order to achieve the trust, honesty, and success that State University values, new people are needed to create a respectful environment for these values. I feel that my background as an American Sikh will provide an innovative perspective in the universityâs search for knowledge while helping it to develop a basis for future success. And that, truly, is the greatest success I can imagine.

Do Colleges Really Care About The Sat Essay?
Do Colleges Really Care About The Sat Essay? This would be an ideal time to use a descriptive essay. But structure here, is just as important as any other essay because you are still in charge of leading the reader into, through and then back out of your world of description without waffling on too much. So, similar to an expository essay, you will require an introduction, body and a conclusion. No matter how qualified you are, you can kill your chances with a bad essay. On the other hand, if you are minimally qualified or even if something fall bellows the minimum, like your test scores, the essay can be your chance for redemption. The Common App asks students to submit one long essay, no more than 650 words. What is considered a good SAT score depends on the colleges and universities that you are applying at. Typically, the higher your SAT score, the greater your chances are of getting into a top school, but it's just one component of an application. It's considered in tandem with your grades, any essays or statements submitted, as well as extracurriculars, charity work, and more. That being said, it's still a good goal to do as well as possible on your SAT. The SAT essay is generally considered one of the least important aspects of a studentâs college application, so an average essay score isnât necessarily an automatic indication that you need to retake the test. Some Common App schools will require additional supplemental writing. In the college essay, you need to contextualize your examples for the reader. The foremost focus should be on your composite score. If you apply to one of the 20 or so schools that do require the essay, you should adequately prepare for it strive for the best score possible. That said, it is imperative that for each school on your college list, look up the school-specific SAT essay policy. You can always call the school if the information is not readily available online. Some schools donât require the essay, but they may recommend taking it. Still not convinced that your essays are important? Letâs look deeper into the four main reasons that colleges require essays as part of the application process to see why theyâre worth your time and attention. Rest assured that admissions officers do, in fact, read your essays. Also, admissions officers view them as an important part of your application. But, if they start writing the essay know that the college may very well determine that the work was not yours. Is your parent going to write your essays that are assigned by professors while you are in college? The college cares how you write not how your parent writes unless they are also applying to the same college as you. However, colleges will generally understand that your talents lie elsewhere. However, you should still aim to write a strong essay, especially if your dream colleges are highly-selective. As the name suggests, this essay is all about the language - adjectives, similes, and metaphors. These kinds of essays are about describing as vividly as possible anything you are asked to write about. An example assignment would be to write an essay about your most recent holiday experience. You still need to present a well-written and carefully-considered essay, of course. If you know writing is somewhat of a weakness, have teachers, guidance counselors, friends, and family members read it and offer feedback. Other schools may not even look at your essay score in the admissions process. Once you do your research, you will have a clearer idea on how to approach taking the essay. If the schools on your list want nothing to do with the SAT essay, feel free not to take it! However, if the schools on your list recommend (but donât require) taking the essay, you should do so, aiming to score as high as possible.
